After 1851 Gyula Benczur studied under H. Anschütz, and then between 1855 and 1869, under K. Piloty. He first scored success in 1867 with the painting "László Hunyady's Farewell". In 1870 he won the national competition of history painting with "The Baptism of Vajk". He assisted Piloty with the frescoes of Maximilianeum and Rathaus in Munich and he also illustrated books by Schiller. The Bavarian king Ludwig II commissioned him to paint Rococo themes, that was the time that be went on a study trip visiting Italy and France. He was invited to direct the painters schools at Prague and at Weimar, but only accepted the professorship at the Academy of Munich in 1876.
He moved back to Hungary in 1883, and became a professor of the Masters' School of Painting, established specifically for him. He soon became the favourite artist of the official line of cultural policy: he painted the portraits of kings and aristocrats, as well as producing monumental history paintings ("The Recapture of Buda Castle", 1896). Other major work by him are the altar painting and mosaic of the St. Stephen Cathedral in Budapest and the panneaux of the Hunyadi Hall in Royal Palace of Buda. In addition, he often painted mythological subjects and nudes, as well as groups of putties in Ruben's mould, decorated with splendid flowers. With these paintings he rivalled the history painting of Makart.

He won numerous prizes and medals in his life. (Gold Medals: 1878 Paris, 1886 Berlin, 1877 Wienna, 1888 Vienna, Munich, 1900 Paris, 1910 Berlin.)

<media:keywords>benczur, gyula, narcissus, gyula benczur, art, oil, painter, painting, men, boy, greek, youth, mythology, echo, love, reflection, shirtless, shirt, less, semi, nude, naked, sexy, young, male, man, 1881</media:keywords><media:rating scheme="urn:mpaa">g</media:rating>

The Flagellation of Our Lord Jesus Christ (1880)

"The Flagellation of Christ is one of Bouguereau’s greatest religious masterpieces. Christ, tied to a column, limply hangs; with his feet dragging on the ground and head hung back he submits to his fate. Two men stand in mid swing with their whipping ropes flying through the air. A third man kneeling to the lower right is fastening birch branches for the next part of the beating. Yet a forth man can be seen standing behind the attacker to the right also with birch branches in the ready. The viewer can feel the pain of Christ's torment. Christ is surrounded by a group of curious spectators. To the left a young boy shelters his eyes from the horrid sight by turning his back and pressing himself against his mother. To the right, just above Christ’s head, a baby looks down at him sympathetically while hoisted up on his father’s shoulders. This life size masterpiece is every bit as great any religious works done by Raphael, Leonardo, or Caravaggio. The harmonious interplay of drawing, paint handling, composition, perspective with this powerful emotional thrust are 2nd to none."

<media:keywords>whipping, beating, flagellation, lord, jesus, christ, 1880, 1825-1905, adolphe, anatomy, art, arts, artist, baby, babies, bouguereau, boy, brother, cathedral, child, children, christian, christianity, cute, eden, eve, father, france, french, fruit, garden of eden, girl, halo, heaven, history, historical, human, infant, innocent, innocence, jesus, la rochelle, mother, oil, paint, painter, painting, photography, paris, realism, religion, sister, spirit, soul, vintage, william, william-adolphe, william adolphe bouguereau, young, youth</media:keywords><media:rating scheme="urn:mpaa">g</media:rating>

It was William Adolphe Bouguereau who single handedly opened the French academies to women, and it was he who was arguably the greatest painter of the human figure in all of art history. His figures come to life like no previous artist has ever before or ever since achieved.
