It's a hot August day in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. What I love about Arches, and the Southwest in general, is how foreign much of the terrain looks compared to the green rolling mountains to which I'm accustomed. In this photograph, the tops of a few immense rock fins fill most of the frame creating V-shaped edges to the blue sky above. Sun strikes the fins on the left, leaving those on the right in shadow. Framed by the main V created by the light and dark Entrada Sandstone formations, a cotton ball cloud touches the top of the image.

What I love about Arches, and the Southwest in general, is how foreign much of the terrain looks compared to the green rolling mountains to which I'm accustomed. In this photograph, the tops of a few immense rock fins fill most of the frame creating V-shaped edges to the blue sky above. Sun strikes the fins on the left, leaving those on the right in shadow. Framed by the main V created by the light and dark Entrada Sandstone formations, a cotton ball cloud touches the top of the image.
