Concord Point Lighthouse

Concord Point Light is a 36-foot tower that was built in 1827. It is the second oldest tower lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay and the oldest continuous lighthouse in Maryland. The tower is built at the point where the Susquehanna River meets the tidal flow of the Chesapeake Bay and navigation is very hazardous around this area.
John Donohoo was the designated builder and also built the keeper's dwelling (also known as the O'Neill House) situated across the street. The lighthouse is constructed of Port Deposit granite. The walls are 31" thick at the base and narrow to 18" at the parapet.

The lantern was originally lit with 9 whale oil lamps with 16-inch tin reflectors. In 1854 a sixth-order Fresnel lens was installed. This was later upgraded to a fifth-order Fresnel lens. The lighthouse was automated in 1920.

The O’Neill family has served as keepers at Concord Point from 1827 to the mid-1900s. The first O’Neill, John, defended the site of the lighthouse during the War of 1812.

Local documents describe the lighthouse area as being "seriously blighted" by 1924, and apparently remained that way for many years. The Coast Guard decommissioned the lighthouse in 1975, soon after that the lens was stolen.

Extensive restoration began in 1979, and is ongoing, with plans to turn the old keeper's dwelling into a museum. The lighthouse is maintained by The Friends of Concord Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse is located in the town of Havre de Grace, Maryland. The tower is open to visitors Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 1:00 p.m. until 5 p.m. May-October. The grounds are open year-round.

<media:keywords>lighthouse, lighthouses, concord point lighthouse, concord point lighthouse, chesapeake</media:keywords><media:rating scheme="urn:mpaa">g</media:rating>

It was authorized by Congress in 1831 and was built in 1833 with a tower and keeper’s quarters by John Donohoo. The tower is 35 feet high and is situated on a 100-foot bluff where the North East and Elk Rivers converge. Originally, the tower had a panel of red glass to warn ships they were approaching the shallows. The beacon was visible for 13 miles and was the highest of 74 lighthouses on the Bay.
Only the lighthouse and the oil house remain, the keepers house was torn down by the Coast Guard.

This lighthouse was the home of the last woman lighthouse keeper, Fannie Salter. She served from 1925 until she retired in 1947. The lighthouse holds the distinction of being tended by more women keepers than any other lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay.

<media:keywords>lighthouse, lighthouses, turkey point, maryland lighthouses, sunset, structure</media:keywords><media:rating scheme="urn:mpaa">g</media:rating>

The burning trash caught the exposed vein of coal on fire. The fire was thought to be extinguished but it apparently wasn't when it erupted in the pit a few days later. Again the fire was doused with water for hours and thought to be out. But it wasn't. The coal then began to burn underground. That was in 1962. For the next two decades, workers battled the fire, flushing the mines with water and fly ash, excavated the burning material and dug trenches, backfilled, drilling again and again in an attempt to find the boundaries of the fire and plan to put the fire out or at least contain it. All efforts failed to do either as government officials delayed to take any real action to save the village. By the early 1980s the fire had affected approximately 200 acres and homes had to be abandoned as carbon monoxide levels reached life threatening levels. An engineering study concluded in 1983 that the fire could burn for another century or even more and "could conceivably spread over an area of approximately 3,700 acres."

<media:keywords>centralia, pa, mine fire, mines, antracite, ashland, underground fire</media:keywords><media:rating scheme="urn:mpaa">g</media:rating>
